What to put in a watermark
- CONFIDENTIAL or PRIVATE — for sensitive documents.
- DRAFT — so a work-in-progress isn’t mistaken for final.
- Your name or company — to mark ownership of a proof or sample.
- DO NOT COPY — for controlled documents.
Shorter text stamps larger and clearer; longer text is scaled down to fit the page.
A label, not a lock
A watermark is a visible marker, not a security control — anyone can still open and read the file. If you need to actually restrict who opens a document, combine the watermark with password protection; and before publishing a PDF publicly, strip hidden information with Remove Metadata.

A watermark is a visible label, not a lock. To actually restrict access, add password protection as well.
