Uses AI in the cloud. To answer your questions, the text of your PDF is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic); it is not stored. If your PDF is a scan, it is first sent to our own server for OCR (sandboxed, deleted immediately). Every other Ream tool runs on your device — this one does not.

Chat with PDF lets you talk to a document. Load a PDF and ask questions in plain language — “What is the notice period?”, “What were the 2023 figures?”, “Summarise section 4” — and get answers drawn straight from the text, with follow-up questions as you go. It’s the fast way to find what you need in a long report, contract or manual without reading every page.

Please note — like Summarize, this is an AI tool that uses the cloud. To answer, the text of your PDF is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) after you tick a consent box. It is processed and returned, not stored. Every other Ream tool runs entirely on your device, so don’t use this for text you can’t share with a third-party AI service. It’s free, with no account and no watermark.

How it works

your PDF AI question ? answer

Your PDF’s text is extracted in your browser. When you confirm, the text and your question go over an encrypted connection to the AI, which answers using only the document — if something isn’t in there, it says so rather than guessing. The conversation stays in your browser; nothing is kept afterwards. If your PDF is a scan with no text, Ream first runs it through OCR on our own server (free) so there’s text to work with.

How to Chat with PDF

  1. Add your PDF

Drop the file onto the box above or click to browse. The text is read in your browser.

  2. Agree, then start the chat

Tick the consent box (the text is sent to the AI provider) and open the chat.

  3. Ask away

Type questions in plain language and get answers from the document — keep asking follow-ups.

Summarize gives you the gist once; Chat lets you interrogate the document — back and forth, as many questions as you like.

Answers grounded in your document

your PDF Q: What is the notice period? A: 30 days — see clause 8, page 4. grounded in the document

Chat answers using only what’s in your PDF. Ask it something the document doesn’t cover and it will tell you it isn’t there, instead of making something up. For the clearest results, ask specific questions (“What is the total in the summary table?”) rather than vague ones, and follow up to narrow things down.

The one kind of tool that uses the cloud

Answering questions needs a large AI model, which can’t run in your browser at good quality — so Chat, like Summarize, sends text to a cloud provider. We keep that explicit: it never happens without your tick, only the text is sent (not the file), it isn’t stored, and our provider (Anthropic) is named in our Privacy Policy. Too sensitive to share? Use the on-device tools instead.

Why choose Ream

Find answers fast

Ask questions instead of reading every page of a long document.

Grounded, not guessed

Answers come from your document; if it’s not in there, the AI says so.

Opt-in and transparent

Text is sent to the AI provider only after you agree, and is not stored.

Scans handled

A scan is OCR’d automatically first (free) so you can chat with it too.

Frequently asked questions

What can I ask?

Anything the document covers — facts, figures, dates, clauses, a summary of a section. Ask follow-ups to dig deeper.

Does it make things up?

It answers using only your document and will say when something isn’t in there. As with any AI, double-check anything important against the source.

Does this send my document somewhere?

Yes — like Summarize, it sends the text (not the file) to our AI provider (Anthropic) after you consent, to answer your questions. It is not stored.

What language are the answers in?

The same language as your question — ask in German and the answer comes back in German.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. A scan is run through OCR automatically first (free, on our server), then you can chat with it.

Is it free?

Yes — free and no watermark, with a fair-use hourly limit.
