Privacy Policy

Your privacy is the whole point of Ream. This policy explains, in plain language, what data is and isn’t processed when you use ream.pro, on what legal basis, and what rights you have.

The short version: the files you edit with our browser-based tools never leave your device, we use no third-party analytics service and set no tracking cookies, and we don’t sell data. The one exception is a single, clearly-marked, opt-in AI tool (Summarize PDF) that uses a cloud service — explained below. The details are below.

Visiting the website (server log files)

When you open a page, your browser necessarily sends technical data to our server, which is recorded in log files: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page, and your browser and operating system. This is required to deliver the site and to keep it secure and stable.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in operating a secure, functioning website). Retention: log entries are kept for 14 days for security and troubleshooting and are then deleted automatically.

Once per hour we count these log entries to see how the site is doing — how many people visited, which pages they opened, which country they came from and which referring site sent them. This happens entirely on our own server: there is no analytics provider, no cookie, no JavaScript tracker and no third party involved. Your IP address is used for two things only — looking up the country and recognising within a single day that two page views came from the same browser — and is then discarded. What we keep are plain totals, such as “312 visitors, 48 from Germany, 27 opened Compress PDF”. Nothing in that stored result can be traced back to you.

Using the PDF tools

How your file is handled depends on the tool:

• Browser tools (most of them) — for example Merge, Split, Rotate, Images to PDF, Edit, Sign, Redact, Remove Metadata. These run entirely in your browser. Your file is opened and processed locally on your own device and is never uploaded to us. We receive no content and no information about your document.
• Server tools — Compress, PDF to Word/Excel/PowerPoint, Office to PDF, HTML to PDF, OCR, Grayscale, Protect and Unlock. These need a real document engine, so your file is transmitted over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our server, processed in an isolated sandbox, and deleted immediately after the result is returned (within seconds). Files are not stored, not viewed, not analysed and not passed to anyone.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performing the service you requested) and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (providing a functioning tool).

AI summaries (opt-in — Summarize PDF)

One tool, Summarize PDF, is different from all the others: it uses an external AI service, it is opt-in, and it never runs automatically. The text of your PDF is extracted in your browser and, only after you tick a consent box, that text (not the file itself) is transmitted over an encrypted connection to our AI sub-processor Anthropic PBC (the “Claude” API, USA), which generates the summary and returns it. The text is used only to produce your summary; it is not stored by us, and under Anthropic’s commercial API terms it is not used to train their models. If a document is too sensitive to share with a third-party service, please do not use this tool — every other tool on Ream runs entirely on your device.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (your explicit consent), which you give by ticking the box and can withhold simply by not using this tool.

Cookies and local storage

We use no analytics or advertising cookies and show no cookie banner, because none is required. WordPress may set strictly necessary functional cookies only when someone logs in to the site’s administration area — not for ordinary visitors. Our tools may use your browser’s local storage on your own device to remember small conveniences; this never leaves your device. See our Cookie Policy for details.

Fonts

The fonts used on this site are hosted on our own server. They are not loaded from Google Fonts or any other third party, so no data (such as your IP address) is transmitted to Google when you view the site.

Loading the interactive tools (Cloudflare cdnjs)

On the pages of the interactive, browser-based tools, the underlying software libraries (for reading and writing PDFs) are loaded from the public open-source CDN cdnjs, operated by Cloudflare, Inc. To deliver these files, your IP address is transmitted to Cloudflare. This is technically necessary to run the tool in your browser.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in providing performant, reliable tools). Cloudflare is a US provider; transfers are covered by Cloudflare’s data-processing terms and applicable EU standard contractual clauses.

Amazon recommendations (affiliate)

Some pages show a small sidebar with recommended products as an Amazon affiliate. To display these, the product images are loaded from Amazon’s servers (m.media-amazon.com), which transmits your IP address to Amazon. If you click a recommendation, the link passes through a short redirect on our own server (/go/…) so that we can count how often a recommendation is used; that step sets no cookie and records nothing beyond the ordinary log entry described above. You are then taken to Amazon, which may set its own cookies and process your data under Amazon’s privacy notice; we earn a commission on qualifying purchases as an Amazon Associate. We do not receive any personal data about you from these clicks.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in financing this free service).

Hosting

The website is hosted on a server located in Germany. All processing described above takes place on that server.

Recipients and international transfers

We do not sell or rent your data. Data is only processed by the providers named above: Cloudflare (tool libraries), Amazon (affiliate images/links), and — only if you choose to use the opt-in AI Summarize tool — Anthropic PBC (generating the summary from the text you submit). Where these involve a transfer to the USA, it is based on the providers’ standard contractual clauses and, where applicable, their certifications.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access your data, to rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. To exercise any of these, email hello@ream.pro.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The authority responsible for us is the Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht (BayLDA), Ansbach.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site evolves. The current version always applies.
