PDF to Word

Turn a PDF into a Word document you can actually edit — real text and tables, not a flat image.

Private by design. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed in an isolated sandbox with no internet access, then deleted the instant it’s done. We never store it or read it. How this works

PDF to Word converts your PDF into an editable Microsoft Word document (.docx). Instead of trapping the page as a picture, Ream rebuilds the paragraphs, headings and tables as real Word content — so you can change the wording, fix a typo, restyle it or copy parts into another document. It’s free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

The conversion runs on our server for top quality, using a proper document-reconstruction engine rather than a rough screenshot. It works best on text-based PDFs — the kind exported from Word, Google Docs or a web page — where there is real text to rebuild. Scanned or photographed PDFs are just images with no text underneath, so for those you’ll want to run OCR first. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed in an isolated sandbox, and deleted the moment it’s done.

How it works

PDF document.pdf convert W editable .docx

Ream reads the text, fonts, positions and table structure inside your PDF and reconstructs them as native Word objects — paragraphs become editable paragraphs, tables stay tables, and lists stay lists. Because it’s a genuine rebuild (not a page image pasted into a document), the result is properly editable in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

The one thing it can’t invent is text that isn’t there: a scanned PDF is a photo of a page with no text layer, so nothing carries over as editable words. Add a text layer first with OCR PDF, then convert.

Editable Word, not a picture of your PDF

PDF fixed page rebuild DOCX editable text & tables

There are two very different kinds of “PDF to Word”. Some tools simply wrap an image of each page inside a .docx — it looks right but you can’t change a single word. Ream does the harder, useful thing:

  • Text comes back as real, selectable, editable text.
  • Tables come back as actual Word tables you can edit cell by cell.
  • Headings, lists and paragraph breaks are preserved as structure, not pixels.

That’s the difference between a document you can work with and a picture you can only look at.

How much formatting carries over

For everyday documents — letters, contracts, reports, articles — expect a faithful result: paragraphs, headings, bullet lists, inline bold/italic and straightforward tables all come through well.

Very heavily designed layouts are harder for any converter: multi-column magazine spreads, pages packed with graphics, or unusual embedded fonts may need a little cleanup afterwards. Think of the output as an excellent editable starting point, not a pixel-perfect clone — which is exactly what you want when the goal is to edit the content.

Converting a scanned PDF

If your PDF came from a scanner or a phone photo, each page is an image and there is no text to extract — a straight conversion would give you a Word file you still can’t edit. The fix is one extra step:

  1. Run the file through OCR PDF to recognise the text and add a searchable text layer.
  2. Then convert that OCR’d PDF here to get editable Word.

When to convert PDF to Word

  • Edit a document you only have as a PDF — a contract, letter or form whose original file is long gone.
  • Update an old report without retyping it from scratch.
  • Reuse text or tables in a brand-new document.
  • Fix a quick typo and re-export, instead of recreating the whole thing.

Tips for the best conversion

  • Start from a text-based PDF where you can select the text — that gives the cleanest result.
  • Scanned document? OCR it first, then convert.
  • If you mainly need the tables as a spreadsheet, use PDF to Excel instead.
  • After converting, skim the tables and headings and tidy anything the layout shifted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Word?

Add your PDF, click Run PDF to Word, and download the .docx. It takes a few seconds and the result opens in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

Is the Word document actually editable?

Yes. Ream rebuilds the text and tables as native Word content, so you can edit every word and cell — it’s not a picture of the page.

Will the formatting be preserved?

Everyday documents keep their paragraphs, headings, lists and basic tables well. Very complex, graphic-heavy layouts may need a little cleanup, but you get a strong editable starting point.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

A scan is an image with no text to extract, so run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert that file to Word.

Is it free, and are there limits or watermarks?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no watermark. Files can be up to 50 MB each.

Is it private and secure?

Your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted in an isolated sandbox with no internet access, and deleted immediately afterwards. We never keep, read or share it.

I mainly need the tables — is there a better tool?

Yes, use PDF to Excel to pull tables straight into a spreadsheet.
