Private by design. This tool runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your device and is never uploaded to us. How this works
Add Page Numbers stamps a clean, sequential number onto every page of your PDF — 1, 2, 3, right through to the last page. Choose where it sits (bottom or top; left, centre or right) and Ream writes the numbers into the file so they show and print like part of the document.
It runs in your browser: your PDF is never uploaded, there’s no account and no watermark. The numbers are drawn in a clean, readable typeface at a sensible size, ready to send, print or archive.
How it works
Ream reads your PDF locally, counts the pages, and draws a number on each one at the corner or centre you picked, keeping a comfortable margin from the edge. The numbers become part of the page — they appear in every viewer and on paper — and the rest of your document is left exactly as it was.

Six positions to choose from
Pick whichever suits the document. Ream keeps an even margin from the edge, so the number never crowds your content:
- Bottom center — the classic choice for reports and books.
- Bottom right and Bottom left — common for letters, manuscripts and bundles.
- Top center, Top right and Top left — handy when the footer area is already busy.
How the numbering works
Numbering is sequential and starts at 1 on the first page, running in order to the last. Every page gets a number, and the count follows the current page order — so if you’ve merged, split or reordered pages, add the numbers last, once the order is final.
Ream stamps a plain number on each page (not a “Page X of Y” style or Bates numbering, and it always begins at 1). That covers the great majority of documents; for anything more elaborate, number your pages here as the finishing step once everything else is in place.
When you’ll want page numbers
- Making a long report or proposal easy to reference in a meeting.
- Paginating a manuscript or thesis before you send it out.
- Numbering a scanned bundle so nothing gets lost or shuffled.
- Preparing handouts so everyone can follow “turn to page 7”.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add page numbers to a PDF?
Add the file, pick a position, and click Run Add Page Numbers. You download a copy with a number on every page.
Where can the page numbers go?
Six positions: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center, top right and top left.
Can I add page numbers without Acrobat?
Yes — no Acrobat and no install. It works in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android.
Does the numbering start at 1?
Yes. Numbers are sequential and begin at 1 on the first page, following the current page order.
Can I use a “Page X of Y” format or a custom starting number?
Not yet — Ream adds a plain sequential number starting at 1, which suits most documents. Arrange your pages first, then number them here as the final step.
Will the number cover my text?
It sits in the margin, so normally no. If your content runs right to the edge in one spot, choose a different position.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Numbering runs entirely in your browser — the PDF never leaves your device.
Is it free, with no watermark?
Yes — free, no sign-up, and no watermark on your PDF.
